About this ride

This is the one trip on Ride Palma that leaves the island: three days of road riding in the Pyrenees, covering 320 km and 7,400 m of climbing. That works out at roughly 107 km and about 2,500 m of ascent each day, so the ride is built around long mountain passes rather than rolling terrain.

The logistics are handled for you. A support van follows the group, a mechanic is on hand for the bike, and you sleep in a hotel each night. You carry little more than what you need for the day, and you can concentrate on pacing the climbs.

Compared with the Palma big climb morning, which is one sharp ascent and a free afternoon, this is a full block of mountain riding, day after day. It is also a very different proposition from the Costa Brava coast road ride, where the climbing is rolling and the day ends at a lunch stop. Here the effort accumulates, and recovery between days matters as much as fitness on the first morning.

  • 320 km and 7,400 m of climbing over three days
  • Van support following the group each day
  • Mechanic on hand for your bike
  • Hotel stay each night, so no luggage to carry on the bike
  • The only multi-day trip in the Ride Palma line-up

Who this camp suits

This is a hard, multi-day road ride, and it is meant for riders who already climb well. Average daily ascent is around 2,500 m, and you repeat that three days running, so one strong day is not enough preparation. Riders who regularly manage long rides with several thousand metres of climbing will be comfortable. If your longest outing is a 60 km morning, start with the Palma big climb morning and build from there. You need a road bike, or a plan to arrange one with the partner, and confidence descending on mountain roads.

How the three days work

Each day is a mountain day: long passes, sustained gradients and descents that are long enough to cool you down before the next climb. The van travels behind the group, so you can top up food and clothing, and you have a fallback if you have had enough. The mechanic deals with mechanical problems and checks the bikes between stages. Each evening ends at a hotel, which gives you a proper meal, a shower and a night's sleep before the next stage. Exact routes and overnight towns are confirmed when you book.

Preparing for 7,400 m of climbing

Think in terms of back-to-back days rather than one big effort. In the weeks before, practise two or three long rides in a row, and include sustained climbs of 30 to 60 minutes. Use compact gearing or a wide-range cassette, since gradients on long passes can stay steep for a while. Start each day at a pace you could hold for hours, eat early and often, and use the van to carry spare layers because temperatures drop quickly at altitude. Mallorca's climbs around Palma make a useful training ground.

How it compares with other tours

Among the Ride Palma tours, this is the longest commitment and the only one that includes hotel nights. The Palma volcano gravel day is the toughest single-day option, but it is off-road and over in a day. The Costa Brava coast road ride is the longest single ride at 118 km, yet with gentler climbing. The Pyrenees camp is for people who want a full block in the mountains, where the logistics are someone else's job and the whole trip is about the riding.

Good to know

How much climbing is there each day?

The total is 7,400 m over 320 km, which averages around 2,500 m and roughly 107 km per day. Individual days may vary, so check the daily split with the partner when booking.
